Overview of the Project

The U. S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recognizes the vast resources available at colleges and universities throughout the nation. Further, that the higher education community can play a vital role in assisting DHS in meeting its mission. To that end, The James E. Clyburn University Transportation Center at South Carolina State University (SCSU) has been selected as the initial test site to catalog the available resources within the higher education community of South Carolina.

As the lead institution, SCSU will gather and catalog related capabilities from the University of South Carolina, Benedict College, Claflin University and South Carolina State University during the first phase of this project. The primary focus will be on identifying the research capability of the higher education community in South Carolina to address homeland security research, training, technology transfer, and related homeland security issues.

A Homeland Security Stakeholders committee comprising the staff of the James E. Clyburn University Transportation Center and officials from federal and state agencies, local agencies, private and public entities, and college officials met on April 22, 2004 to identify homeland security research and training opportunities.
