Certificate Program Overview

During February 2000, Center staff met with the SC DOT Mass Transit Division to discuss the framework for developing certificate programs in transit management, operations, and logistics. As a result, several training and technology transfer needs were identified and an agreement was reached whereby the Center began training/technology transfer activities during August 2000. The Center will also recommend appropriate training requirements to the SCDOT for qualifying individuals in the categories as Transportation Specialist I and II, Operations Specialist I and II, and Transportation Manager I and II. These categories and titles will be revisited following completion of a needs assessment study.

On July 1, 2000, the Division of Mass Transit contracted with the UTC to develop and teach certificate programs that transit providers would use to obtain certification from the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). Prior to developing the certificate programs, the Center is to conduct a needs assessment to determine the training needs of SC transit providers. On July 5, 2000 the needs assessment was approved by the SC Mass Transit and was distributed to transit providers in the state shortly thereafter.
