Southern Rural Transportation Center

Overview

The Southern Rural Transportation Center focuses on and addresses rural transportation in South Carolina and the Southern region of the United States with a goal to improve the vitality, mobility and quality of life for the service areas. Current programs of the Center include a Surface Transportation Research Program, and a Rural Transit Demonstration Project. The Five Year Strategic Plan for the Center is also currently being developed. Additional programs and projects will be added based on the vision, mission and goals adopted under the strategic plan.


Orangeburg County Rural Transit Demonstration Project

The SRTC is currently implementing a program to investigate, develop, and implement new solutions for an efficient, reliable, and sustained transit system for the rural community of Orangeburg County. The project seeks to develop partnerships with: South Carolina Department of Transportation; Lower Savannah Council of Governments; Santee Wateree Regional Transit Authority; Orangeburg County governments; local colleges and universities; and other stakeholders to plan and implement the project.

Research Program

The objectives of the research program are to support research to assess the conditions and needs and the development of tools and strategies to improve transportation systems in rural and small communities in South Carolina and the Southern Region of the United States and to make research results and transportation technology available to potential users in a form that can be directly implemented, utilized, or otherwise applied.
